Do You Remember Scripture Well? Me Neither! (By Andy Baker.)

From my life in 1943 I remember this little
episode. It was the middle of World War 2
and I happened to be in a little town in South
Alabama. It was Sunday morning and I decided
to attend the church of Christ there. When I got
inside the church building I found that, beside
myself, all the Christian attendees were women.
The men of the church were all off to war.

Following the Scriptural pattern of the church
of the first century, the church of Christ today
does not call on women to take a public part
in the worship service. Here I was, the only
man in the congregation that day. Some ladies
whom I knew, reminded me I had been a student
at Lipscomb College and should have been
prepared to take the lead in the worship service.
I was asked to lead the worship. I was able to
lead the singing, administer the Lord’s supper,
and lead in a general prayer, but ashamedly
I had to admit that I did not have a sermon
to bring them. The worship service was rather
short.

For many years I always kept the notes for a
Christian sermon in my inside coat pocket
so that I would be ready to speak if called
upon. At least the sermon would be new to
the audience.

Seventy nine years have passed since that
day in South Alabama. I am 90 years old now
and I find myself again unable to remember
my sermons. I often read my old website
sermons and marvel that the Lord gave me
the insight to write that which I had forgotten.
I would again be ashamed to say that I have
no sermon unless I have some recent notes
for one. That is why Brother Baker’s little
sermon on the front of the latest “Family Ties,”
(“Do You Remember Scripture Well?” caught
my mind and made me want to have all my
readers see it. So I am including it for you below.

“I can’t remember Bible verses like I used to when
I was younger. How about you? I can’t recall many
of the sermons I have preached in the past.
How many sermons can you remember that you
have heard in your life?

“My Mom was a great cook. She fixed good tasting
meals three times a day every day. I can’t recall very
many combinations of food that she fixed but they
were good. Although I can’t tell you the makeup of
the meals that Mom fixed, every meal nourished me
and helped me grow up physically. I may not recall
all the things she fixed, but all the food she prepared
helped me be strong, energetic, and 6 ft. 1 inch.
The meals formed me.

“Maybe I can’t recall many of the sermons I have
heard or preached. You might not remember many
of the sermons and classes you have enjoyed. But
all the Scripture that we have read, heard preached
and to which we have listened have fed us spiritually.
It has formed us, matured us and helped us grow
more into the image of Jesus. The word of God
worked on us, teaching us, correcting us and
instructing us helping us to be complete, mature
followers of Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:16,17.)

“Don’t be troubled if you can’t remember Scripture
like you once could. The Word has been working
on you, in your mind and for you in your life. Sermons
and Scripture that you have heard in your life,
just like all the meals you have eaten, have fed you
and matured you and given you the daily values that
have guided your life. Can’t remember as well?
Don’t lose heart. Its still working on you and in you.
I can’t wait to study with you Sunday. Your week
is in my prayers.

HELLO DADDY

I was thinking how much pleasure it gives me
when my children call me on the phone. Then
I wondered if it gave God pleasure when His
children call Him in prayer. I concluded that it
did give God pleasure when His children called
Him in prayer. Chapter and verse? I can’t
recall the chapters and verses but I know the
thought is there in the Bible. “Pray continuously.”
That verse ought to be enough to capture the
thought. “Knock and it shall be opened unto
you.” “God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son.” The gifts He gives us
of “faith, hope, and love.” The examples of how
so often Jesus prayed to His Father as Jesus
lived on earth. Jesus continuously had an open
line to His Father, always ready for His prayers.

In this day with personal telephones you can
carry in your pocket, God has given us the open
line for earthly fathers and their children to
converse anytime with pleasure. I get great
pleasure when my sons and daughter call me.
Hello dad, this is Joe, or hello dad, this is Charlie,
or especially, hello daddy, this is Sandi. I say,
especially Sandi, because it seems to have fallen
to her to sort of take care of her daddy in his old
age. She lives nearby . She has special needs,
being unemployed, while Joe and Charlie are
away on “special assignments.” Isn’t that the
way God runs His realm?

I’m not likening myself to God, the Father but maybe
there are lessons to be learned in this comparison.
One lesson, for sure, we ought to pray more often
to the Heavenly Father. I yearn for my children to
call. Doesn’t God yearn for His children, us earthlings,
to call?

Obama’s State of the Union Address.

Obama’s State of the Union Address.

Did you notice that Obama promised in his State of the Union Address to
do within the coming year many of the things that the Republicans have
promised to do when he is voted out of office?

How do we know that Obama is lying when he made these promises, for
instance, to open up oil drilling on the coasts and within the United
States? Simple. He has refused to provide an oil pipeline from Canada
which will provide a new “shovel ready” source of hundreds of jobs, oil
delivered directly to our our oil processing center in Texas,cheaper
gasoline, and other good things.

It is a pretty good tactic in the game of politics, to promise what the
nation wants and needs, but it ain’t going to happen because its all a
ruse.

Obama’s Ponzi Scheme.

“Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong
city! For in one hour
your judgment has come. … For in one
hour such great wealth has been
laid waste. … because
all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.”
(Revelation 18: 17, 19, 23).

President Barack Obama’s Trillion dollar bailout scheme
bears many
characteristics
of the criminal Ponzi scheme
for which Mr. Bernard
Madoff has now been convicted. One
difference is that Mr.Madoff
conducted his scheme
in secret and Mr. Obama
is conducting his
scheme
in the full sight of the investors, the American
taxpayers. Moreover,
Mr. Obama’s scheme (involving much more money than Mr.
Madoff’s scheme)
is being imposed
openly on present and future taxpayers for many years
to come. The money for tax payer investment
is not yet in hand and must
be borrowed by the government in behalf of the future taxpayers. Mr.
Obama’s scheme appears to be
a multi generational Ponzi scheme in which
future generations are to be left
holding the empty bag from a
fraudulent investment for which Congress made them responsible. A
seemingly mesmerized
Congress is “falling for” or “promoting” Mr.
Obama’s scheme “hook, line, and sinker.”

I understand from reading Google’s Wikipedia that a Ponzi
Scheme is
similar in many respects to a Pyramid Scheme.
The definition of a
Pyramid Scheme is
given as “a non- sustainable business model that
involves the exchange of money primarily
for enrolling other people
into the scheme often without any
product or service being delivered.”
The definition of a Ponzi scheme is given as “a fraudulent investment
operation that pays returns to investors from their own money or money
paid by subsequent
investors rather
than from profits. The Ponzi
scheme
usually offers
abnormally high short term returns in order to entice
new investors.
The perpetuation of returns that a Ponzi scheme
advertises, and
sometimes pays requires an ever
increasing flow of
money from investors
in order to keep the scheme going.”

In Mr. Obama’s
fraudulent scheme the investors are the tax
payers and
they are given no choice to opt in or out of the investment. The money
“invested” is
borrowed for them from potential enemy countries,
like
China, who then charge interest on the
money provided. The “investment”
is branded as
fraudulent from the beginning by many in Congress by
their statements
that ” maybe some of the money
eventually will be paid
back to the tax payers.” There is no real assurance or even expectation
that the “investment” will be paid back
in full with profit to the
tax-payers from successful productive use of the money. But Mr. Obama
plans to tax the citizens
of America to pay the interest and
reduce the
principal of the debt which was
hurriedly incurred to make the
so-called “investment”
possible.

Mr. Obama’s scheme is like a Ponzi scheme in
that it is presented
as an
investment that had to be made quickly
or the “opportunity” would be
lost. There was
said to be no time to scrutinize
the merits of the
scheme. As a result of being stampeded
into such quick Congressional
action, billions of dollars have already been lost
forever down a black
hole. Already the Obama Ponzi scheme is calling for more money for the
so-called “bailout investments” are not working to make any pay back.
Tax Payer job losses are increasing and
depression is deepening.

Mr. Madoff was convicted of his fraudulent scheme.

Solution: Remove as
much of the Congress
as possible in the 2010
elections. Remove the President and the rest
of Congress in
the 2012
elections. Start
preparing to convict Obama.

More on Paul’s “Obedience of Faith” as Expressed in the Roman Letter.

My comments on Paul’s Letter to the Romans (contained in my book “God’s Righteousness Revealed”) makes much of Paul’s expression of the phrase ”obedience of faith.” (Romans 1:5; 16:26.) The Roman Letter explains that a Christian’s actions to fulfill the “obedience” that is connected with “faith” is fulfilled by the Christian’s following of the indwelling Holy Spirit’s lead. My Christian friend Edward Fudge published a blog today which clearly relates the relationship of “obedience” to “faith.” I want my readers to read Brother Fudge’s remarks reproduced below.

DOES FAITH INCLUDE OBEDIENCE?

Someone comments that “faith is a combination of what we believe coupled with what we’re willing to do about it. It is belief plus action.”

* * * We must never separate faith and action but neither should we confuse the two. Action demonstrates faith, expresses faith, confirms faith, even fulfills faith — and sometimes it invalidates and casts doubt on verbal claims of faith. But action is not the same thing as faith and it is not, strictly speaking, part of faith. The danger with thinking that action is part of faith itself is that one easily slides from that notion into the error of thinking one is set right with God by grace through action, or even by action without grace. Paul makes clear we are justified “by grace through faith” (Eph. 2:8-9).

When we remember that saving faith simply means trusting God to be gracious and heartily entrusting ourselves to him as a gracious God, we avoid that problem. And so long as we also remember that living faith expresses itself in action, we will never be in danger of losing that part of the truth, which James emphasizes in chapter two of his very important epistle.

However, it is important also to remember that one’s faith will express itself in action consistent with one’s knowledge and understanding of God’s will. It is inappropriate, therefore, for one believer to judge another believer to be an unbeliever simply because the second believer has not yet come to the same knowledge as the first believer, even though the second believer is acting out of faith according to the knowledge he or she does possess. That, after all, is the most any of us can ever hope to do.
